Unedited vector file, converted by software only

Level 3

Unedited Vector Data files are vector-translated files created with raster-to-vector conversion software from a scanned image. These are saved in standard GIS or CAD file formats such as AutoCAD, Microstation or Arc/Info. Typically, these vector files are not recommended for direct editing, but could be quite useful as attachments or “backgrounds” to newly created vector data. Just keep in mind that simpler originals of high graphics quality will convert much better than very complex, poor quality ones. This is simply because the busier or more complex a particular document is, the more taxing it is for the software to differentiate among the various objects to be separated as vector data.

Level 3 files are the next step up from Level 2 scans. Gray scale, high quality, high-resolution images are edited to extract the maximum possible sharpness from the scanned data. Then, each image is contrast-enhanced to separate linework from background, inserted into GIS or CAD files and scaled to real-life size ready for further post-processing. Then, we run our interactive Raster-To-Vector software to create a reproduction of the original document using vector-based objects such as lines, arcs, polylines and circles rather than pixels.  However, Level 3 files retain textual and dimensional data only as lines and arcs and not as editable alphanumeric objects.  Moreover, vectors are not separated by meaningful layers since the software alone has no intelligence to determine the discipline-specific interpretation of the data present in the scan.

Of course, as true GIS and CAD data files, these converted files may be edited in native form with any vector program such as AutoCAD, Microstation, Arc/Info, Illustrator, and generally any program that will accept data in the industry-standard DXF format. You can edit and “cleanup” these files in the same manner you would others created “from scratch” by these programs. Depending on your originals, editing may range from a quick and simple exercise to a very labor intensive and time-consuming project. If you feel that the cost-savings afforded by our Level 3 product will offset the time you may need to spend in post-conversion cleanup, then this option is for you.
